V-LED Africa Workshop

Save the Date: the V-LED Africa Workshop "Localising Climate Finance and Action" will be organised on 23-25 April, 2018 in the surroundings of Cape Town, South Africa. We invite experts to submit abstracts for a think piece or session input for the workshop. The closing date for abstracts is 12 February 2018. Contributions can be based on research, policy or practice that capture the latest African knowledge around local climate action for the achievement of the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs), local climate finance and multi-level climate governance.

We invite you to submit abstracts for a think piece or session input for the V-LED Africa Workshop to be held on 23–25 April 2018 in the surroundings of Cape Town, South Africa.

The closing date for abstracts is 12 February 2018.

Contributions can be based on research, policy or practice that capture the latest African knowledge around local climate action for the achievement of the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs), local climate finance and multi-level climate governance.

The workshop aims to advance the African discussion around these themes, open the space for South-North learning and exchange, and kick-start connections between professionals with mutual interest. The workshop will bring together policymakers, officials, researchers and practitioners from the sub-national and national climate governance community in Africa, as well as donor organisations, civil society and the private sector.

The workshop will focus on the two V-LED African countries Kenya and South Africa but we invite thematic contributions from all African countries with an additional focus on Ethiopia, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania. However, we encourage those with knowledge emerging from other African countries to submit their abstracts. We are interested in supporting the publication of promising papers.

The participation in this workshop is free of charge. Those selected to contribute to the workshop will receive funding to cover their travel and accommodation costs.

Workshop Themes
We invite you to address one or more of the following thematic questions:

Theme 1: Local climate action for the achievement of NDCs
For example: How can local governments influence national processes? How is climate change response linked to local service delivery? How can mitigation and adaptation efforts converge? What are concrete African successes?

Theme 2: Local climate finance
For example: How are local governments financing climate change action? What hands-on practices, initiatives, solutions exist in terms of financing climate change initiatives and what can we learn from them? What are entry points for accessible, transparent and effective local climate finance?

Theme 3: Multi-level climate governance
For example: How do different levels of governance coordinate to effectively support local action on climate change mitigation and adaptation? What enables and/or drives local climate action from a multi-level governance perspective?

Contributions and formats
We are looking for abstracts from researchers, decision-makers and practitioners from various African countries who are interested in sharing their lessons, practices and research on these themes with an engaged group of relevant international actors in a collegial and dynamic setting.

Think pieces are short papers debating thoughts and opinions to spark discussion in the larger community. They should be 2,000-3,000 words. Abstracts for think pieces are only 300 words.
Session inputs are short inputs (of maximum 15 minutes) to give an impulse for discussion. They can have various formats, such as a story, a presentation, keynote, pitch or visual story. Abstracts for session inputs are only 300 words.

Selection criteria and organising team
The abstract must advance the discussion in at least one of the themes described
It must significantly capture or advance African knowledge on these themes
The applicant can take full responsibility for the content and delivery of the content during the workshop
The applicant is available to coordinate her or his participation and contribution and collaborate with the organising team
The organising team will evaluate abstracts on the basis of quality, relevance, innovation, inclusiveness, diversity and gender balance
We may request applicants with similar content to consider collaborating in their contributions
The project “Vertical Integration and Learning for Low-Emission Development in Africa and Southeast Asia” (V-LED) is a four-year project led by adelphi and implemented by an international consortium of partners in Kenya, South Africa, Philippines and Vietnam, supported by the Federal Government of Germany as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
