The REIPPPP is a South African government programme that supports the development of renewable energy projects such as wind and solar. Private companies build and operate these projects and sell electricity to Eskom. Under the programme, developers are required to invest in nearby communities through community and enterprise development initiatives over the life of the project.
Under the programme, developers are required to invest in nearby communities through community and enterprise development initiatives over the life of the project.
One example is the Kouga Wind Farm Community Development Trust, which holds a 26% stake in the project to support local development. The trust has invested millions of rand into community initiatives, supported over 13 SMMEs, and contributed to job creation.
Unlike projects under the REIPPPP, independent power producers (IPPs) that sell electricity directly to municipalities are not required by law to invest in nearby communities.
New renewable energy models are therefore looking at ways to include community benefit requirements in agreements between municipalities and IPPs. This can help make sure that local communities are included in projects and share in the benefits of renewable energy developments.
